Built Your Own Website? Here’s What You’re Missing (Hint: It’s SEO)

Lately, I’ve been hearing the same question from a lot of my clients:“What should I be doing for SEO?”

It’s no surprise — as website platforms like Squarespace, Shopify, and Wix have made it easier than ever to build your own site, more entrepreneurs are taking the DIY route. And honestly, that’s amazing! But even the most beautiful site won’t perform well if it’s not being found. That’s where SEO (Search Engine Optimization) comes in.

If you’re not quite sure where to begin, don’t stress. Here are a few simple best practices that can help your site show up in search results — and bring the right people to your digital doorstep.

🔍 SEO Basics Every Small Business Owner Should Know

1. Use Keywords Strategically
Think about the words people are actually typing into Google when they’re looking for your product or service. Add those phrases (naturally!) to your headlines, subheadings, and page descriptions. This includes your homepage, services page, and blog posts.

2. Write Clear Meta Descriptions
Each page on your website has a meta description — it’s the little blurb that shows up in search results. Keep it short, relevant, and include a keyword or two. It’s your site’s mini elevator pitch.

3. Optimize Your Images
Use descriptive file names and alt text for every image you upload. Instead of “IMG0004.jpg,” rename it something like “custom-soy-candle-toronto.jpg.” This helps with SEO and improves accessibility too.

4. Make Sure Your Site Is Mobile-Friendly
Most web traffic happens on phones now, so Google gives preference to mobile-optimized sites. Make sure your text is easy to read on smaller screens and that buttons are tap-friendly.

5. Get Those Links Right
Include internal links (linking between pages on your site) and outbound links (to reputable external sources). Bonus tip: set outbound links to open in a new tab so visitors don’t lose your site.

6. Keep Your Content Fresh
Search engines love new content. Even updating old blog posts or refreshing your homepage copy every now and then can make a difference. Blogging is one of the best tools in your SEO toolbox.

7. Claim Your Google Business Profile
If you haven’t done this yet, do it today. It helps people find your business on Google Maps and in local searches.
